Restore Don't Replace
Restore Don't Replace
Your windows and doors are the heart and soul of your historic home. No matter what condition, they can be saved and brought back to their former function and elegance. Restored windows can be as energy efficient as replacements, saving the charm and integrity of your home. Windows and doors, crafted from old growth wood, were handmade by craftsmen using traditional mortise and tenon methods. They have already lasted 100 years or more and will last another 100 after replacements have been replaced. Be a steward of your historic home by preserving the character and charm of your original windows and doors.
What is old growth wood? If your house was built before the 1930’s, there’s a good chance your windows and doors are made from first or second generation trees. Trees that had never been harvested and cut for the first time as Americans began to settle and grow, are considered first growth. The wood is much denser with tighter growth rings and will basically last forever when maintained. Even second growth trees, which grew during the 1800’s, allowed them to mature, and have the same lasting characteristics. As America continued to grow and the demand for wood, harvesting became commercialized and trees were not allowed to mature before being cut. Unfortunately, this wood does not have the same characteristics as “old Growth” and will not last as long.
